An icon (Greek: εἰκών eikṓn ‘image, resemblance’) is a religious devotional painting in the Eastern Orthodox Church and also found within Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic churches. They are not primarily considered artworks, but are regarded as sacred images used in religious devotions. Subjects frequently include Christ, Mary, the saints and angels, and the imagery has great visual continuity in both style and subject.
